Did a TV show really affect politics?

I read somewhere that if it wasn't for the success of The Cosby Show in the 80s showing a successful middle class Black family we wouldn't have elected President Obama. Did this show appeal to middle class whites were some 20 years later they were comfortable enough to elect Obama president?
